the third movement considers the boundaries of the self, musical expectancy, and the tethers of reality through a track composed over seven separate listening experiences.
This project was inspired by Tim Ingold’s lecture "Noise Sound Silence," in which he brings attention to the senses and stimulus, positing their independent generation.
I create sound shadows with a source blocking technique that uses the audible interference produced by my moving body partially obstructing the reception of sound by a recording device.
These surfaces resonate in an embodied way themselves. Once part of a living organism they maintain their connective tissues and the sound inhabits these fibres, bearing resemblance to a complex resonant body.
The piece will play once every 15 minutes, looping 4 times per hour:
Gently place your hands on the surfaces of the box to feel the sound of contained action.
The imagery both projected and apparent communicates through what is withheld. The space is empty, bated, yet inseparable from the life that it has housed.
